Brunei Minister of Communications Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof in a message to mark World Maritime Day 2018, said the country is fully committed to the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the maritime environment.

Importantly, he said the Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam (MPABD) will continuously improve the maritime situation to fulfil IMO regulations.

The MPABD officially opened on September 28, 2017 as a statutory board. It falls under the Ministry of Communications. It is responsible for the management, administration and security of maritime and port affairs in line with international standards.

Therefore, MPABD will take over registration of all shipping, freight forwarding, stevedorage and transportation agents providing services at all ports by November 2018. It will cooperate closely with the Royal Customs and Excise Department, Ministry of Finance.

To promote the domestic shipping sector, MPABD has appointed Classic Reliance Bureau (CRB) as the domestic classification society. It is responsible for surveys and inspections of non-conventional ships weighing less than 500 gross tonnage registered under the Brunei Darussalam flag.

Also, CRB will ensure ships comply with requirements and standards as set by MPABD.

Follow international standard

MPABD will draft four main regulations related to safety, environmental pollution and maritime human resource competency standards. This is to ensure compliance with international standard requirements.

On the other hand, for domestic maritime safety, MPABD will update the Harbour Craft Regulations. This is to improve and further strengthen safety for passengers and domestic boats, especially in the Brunei River.

Finally, with these initiatives, Brunei hopes Muara Port will be a port of choice at par with other regional ports.
